Trauma

Trauma can be described as any disturbing experience causing distress to an individual.  Therefore, what is considered traumatic is different for each individual. Often times, traumatic experiences are accompanied with anxiety, depression, intrusive thoughts, nightmares, panic attacks, doubting one’s self-worth, and self-isolation. While symptoms will inevitably vary depending on a person’s unique circumstances and their individual capacity to respond to the situation, trauma can be difficult to overcome and leave lasting impacts on neural pathways.  Individuals experiencing a traumatic event may struggle to connect with others or even perform daily life tasks.

If you have experienced a traumatic event, we are trained to help. We have training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) that assists in processing distressing experiences and beliefs. This approach has been proven successful in helping individuals to overcome the impact of trauma and begin living fully and connecting with others again.  Our therapists are trained and able to work with children, adolescents, and adults using EMDR.  In addition to EMDR, we utilize cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness strategies, and elements of narrative therapy as a means for processing traumatic experiences and learning to cope with and regulate the mind's and body’s natural responses to trauma related triggers.  Some situations in which trauma related support may be needed are:

  • Neglect

  • Physical Abuse

  • Sexual Abuse

  • Removal from Primary Caregivers

  • Medical Conditions

  • Accidents and Injuries

  • Losses and Grief

  • Domestic Violence

  • Traumatic Birth
